In 2016, the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia and Bond University were honoured to win the Queensland Premier’s Reconciliation Award for Yarning Up.
This prestigious accolade acknowledges that increasing knowledge around Indigenous education and developing a deeper, more personal understanding of Indigenous culture is vitally important for every educator, corporate leader, school and organisation. It also affirms our belief that there is no better way to gain this knowledge and experience than through a first-hand connection with an Indigenous community.
From 8 – 13 August this year, Bond University will once again provide a rare opportunity to be immersed in the life of one of Australia’s most remote Aboriginal communities.
Developed by community leaders, the five-day itinerary includes exclusive access to cultural presentations; honest and open discussions about challenges and achievements; and, most importantly, one-on-one conversations with the parents, grandparents, Elders and leaders who are working towards a better future for their children.
This unique personal and professional development experience is designed in the spirit of true collaboration and connection, forging vital links between Australia’s leading educators, corporate achievers and remote communities. It also provides a setting for dynamic exchanges between the participants, facilitating a think tank on leadership, professional practice and opportunities for partnerships.
In previous years, the Yarning Up delegation has visited Lockhart River and the Torres Strait Islands in far north Queensland – click the links to view videos of these unique experience and get an insight into the profound impacts on and learnings of those participants.
We very much hope they will inspire you to join us when Yarning Up returns to Lockhart River in 2018. The Alliance is offering $1000 towards the cost of the trip to the first three members who register interest. To find out more contact Laura Harvey (e) [email protected] (t) (07) 5595 1430
