Mount Alvernia College is an independent Catholic secondary school for girls operated by the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. As a Franciscan College, Mt. Alvernia endeavours to follow the example of Jesus in the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. The college is located in a Franciscan precinct which encompasses a parish primary school and a boys’ primary and secondary college. Parent involvement in all areas of college life is encouraged and the college is widely recognised for its welcoming community.
Students are drawn from Catholic primary schools in the north and north-west of Brisbane; around 20% come from State primary schools. Mt Alvernia had an enrolment of 685 in 2008 and this has grown steadily to around 800 students in 2012. In line with this increased enrolment and moving to a Year 7 to12 secondary College in 2015, the school has embarked on a major building program in 2013 and 2014. This includes 16 new Learning Areas, 6 new Science laboratories, new Home Economics classrooms and a new canteen. As well there will be new Administration, Reception and Staff areas.
The core values of the school are achieved by its inclusive enrolment policy where students of all academic abilities are represented at the College. The academic vision of the college has been developed through the implementation of curriculum based on encouraging excellence in line with both Australian and Queensland Curriculum in Years 8, 9 and 10 and the implementation of a broad range of Authority and Authority Registered subjects and Vocational Education programs in Years 11 and 12. To ensure the total development of our students, opportunities to be involved in spiritual programs, extensions activities, community outreach programs, sporting and social activities are encouraged.
