St Margaret Mary’s College is a Catholic girls’ secondary school, centrally located in tropical Townsville. Established in 1963 by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict, St Margaret Mary’s has as its mission to be an excellent Catholic learning community where young women are educated, inspired and inspirited. The daily life of the College is enhanced by living the Benedictine Values and being centred on Jesus Christ.The College provides an innovative and nurturing environment that focuses on educating holistically. St Margaret Mary’s offers a broad curriculum and has a proud tradition of extra-curricular involvement including a competitive sports program, an established vocal ensemble (Bella Voce), a strong Public Speaking and Debating program and many community service opportunities, including Young Christian Students (YCS), Campus Ministry and St Vincent de Paul groups and a robust student leadership framework. Students have the chance to try their hand at more than 12 different sports including equestrian, basketball, touch football, football, swimming, cross country, volleyball, hockey, water polo, netball, track and field athletics and rowing. Over 75% of students are involved with at least one sport. The Australian Curriculum is implemented across the core subjects in Junior Secondary, with an appropriate suite of electives in The Arts and Technology. Two languages are offered – Italian and Japanese. In Senior, over 25 OP-eligible subjects and a vocational program are offered in Years 11 and 12. Career Development Education spans all year levels, with particular attention in Year 10 SET planning process to prepare for the senior course of study and Years 11/12 to prepare for post-school options. A whole-school initiative is a focus on Positive Psychology which underpins the student well-being and health programs. Teachers and support staff believe that it is important for girls to have the opportunity to express themselves and develop their confidence in a caring and supportive environment.
