A new book by psychologist Dr Lisa Damour is designed to help parents of daughters negotiate the highs and lows of the angst-filled teen years. Untangled: Guiding Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood, contains chapters on seven distinct developmental phases that girls go through, including ‘Parting with Childhood’, ‘Contending with Adult Authority’ and ‘Entering the Romantic World’. Lisa draws on her experience as a practising psychologist and Director of the Laurel School’s Center for Research on Girls to help parents understand their daughter’s behaviour, dealing with topics ranging from friends, social media and body image to test anxiety, self-harm and sexuality.
