Oxford University has launched a free downloadable guide for parents and carers coping with the difficult situation of their child’s self-harm. Based on in-depth research with parents showing that they often feel isolated and don’t know where to turn, the guide contains topics including understanding self-harm, managing injuries, and looking after parents’ own needs. In addition, Oxford University’s Centre for Suicide Research, in collaboration with Healthtalk.org, has developed an excellent series of video and audio clips of parent experiences of self-harm, including advice for parents and carers from Professor Keith Hawton, Director of the Centre for Suicide Research, and Dr Anne Stewart, a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Oxford University.
