The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, being held twenty years after the 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women, is “Beijing +20 – Let’s not wait another 20 years for gender equality”. Julie Mackay, Executive Director of the Australian National Committee for UN Women, says that while there are success stories to be shared, “we must also take stock and reflect on the significant amount of work that is still needed if gender equality is to be achieved in this generation”.
As a part of International Women’s Day events this week, UN Women Australia is asking men to sign up to the HeForShe campaign and take active steps to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, such as speaking out against sexism, mentoring a woman, ensuring that their workplaces are inclusive of women, and modeling gender equality in their homes. Men can take the HeForShe campaign pledge on the UN Women Australia website and share their image of support using the hashtag #HeForShe and tagging @UNWomenAust on Twitter and Instagram.
