STEM Adventures at SEGA

July 22, 2023 - August 3, 2023

In Tanzania, the participation of female students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines in Higher Education is low. According to UNESCO, women in Tanzania represent 40 percent of university enrollment, but only about 24 percent are enrolled in STEM. In Tanzania, students are required to select a track to study in high school after Form 2. This track could be either Science, Arts, or Business. To achieve higher levels of girls’ participation in STEM subjects Nurturing Minds and SEGA launched a pilot STEM extracurricular program that reinforced concepts learned in class, made STEM learning interactive and accessible, and emphasized the myriad possibilities of careers in STEM for women.

The STEM Adventures at SEGA Program will take place from July 22 – August 3, 2023, with the objective of giving Form 1 students hands-on experience and cultural exchange opportunities through an immersive week-long program filled with captivating activities and experiments on relevant topics to encourage and motivate the students to pursue a bright future in STEM!

The STEM Adventures at SEGA Program will include student and volunteer-led activities to engage in science practices in the lab and in the field. We will explore, explain, and evaluate the environment through the lens of a chemist, biologist, and environmentalist. Students will be participating in week-long activities, including a field trip and special guest speakers, all learning relevant science topics. The program will culminate with an end-of-week Science Share! Volunteers will end the week with a weekend safari at the nearby Mikumi National Park! To achieve the program’s goals and objectives the volunteer team will engage students and teaching staff in:

  1. Intensive STEM Training
  • A group of volunteers primarily from the U.S. will provide extracurricular STEM training for students. The STEM volunteers along with SEGA’s STEM department will play key roles in coordinating this training. Ideally, volunteers will have an education, interest, or STEM career-related background.

2. Field Trip

  • All volunteers and students will have the opportunity to incorporate into their learning experience a field trip for students to be better able to connect science with life right in Morogoro!

3. Sustainable STEM Program Tool Kit

  • Volunteers will create ongoing resources for SEGA teachers to continue to emphasize the STEM Program lessons and reinforce SEGA’s STEM Curriculum.

4. End of Week Science Share

  • Students will lead a Science Share presentation to display their work, learnings, and understanding of what it means to be a scientist and what they learned throughout the week. After the Science Share enjoy a movie night with students!
