More about Being 14
What do 14-year-old girls want and need us to know? That’s at the heart of a huge research project and book authored by award-winning author and journalist Madonna King. She’s interviewed 200 14-year-old girls from across Australia, and looked at the 22,000 contacts 14-year-old girls have had with Kids Helpline over the past 4 years. In Being 14, she let’s them tell their stories — the struggle with self image, and lure of the in-crowd, the angst they feel at the pressures at home, the confusion over competing with boys in debating and then waiting to be asked to dance. In Being 14, the girls tell us what they see as their challenges, and how we might help them. Madonna also talked to dozens of principals, teachers, school nurses, teen psychologists, parenting groups and police, in the hope that we can all work together to help our teens become awesome women.
